"Em Kölsche Boor" - closely interwoven with history

Brewhouse "Em Kölsche Boor"

"Stop drinking the Cologne beer

Stay with Rich

It falls sweetly and sadly"

This is what is carved into the Eigelsteintorburg, right under the portrait of the Cologne farmer. Translated, it means: "Hold on, you Cologne farmer, stay on the side of the empire, in good times and in bad." This saying was actually meant to bind the Cologne farmers to the Prussian Empire. Why was that important to them? Well, we Cologners could always rely on the farmers. They always supported us in the most important battles. The Battle of Worringen is probably the best example here. But let's now turn to a wonderfully traditional brewery nearby: "Em Kölsche Boor"!

The Eigelstein in Gaffel-Hand

The brewery was first mentioned at this location in 1760, then under the name "Zum Elephanten". It was later renamed "Stavenbräu" in reference to the neighboring alley Im Stavenhof. The name "Em Kölsche Boor" was not used until 1907 and has survived to this day. Gaffel Kölsch was served here from 1953 to 2020, and the Gaffel brewery shaped the image of Eigelstein at that time. Until a few years ago, Eigelstein was practically a pure Gaffel-Kölsch culture. "Em Kölsche Boor" served as the flagship of the Gaffel brewery for a long time, until attention turned to the newly opened Gaffel am Dom in 2008.

Inside "The Kölsche Boor"

Since 2020, the brewery has been under the management of the Zur Malzmühle brewery, and since then the malt-focused Mühlen-Kölsch has been flowing through the pipes here. The brewery offers plenty of space, up to 320 seats can be found here, and an additional 120 outside when the weather is nice. And since the Eigelstein has largely become a pedestrian zone, it is really very pleasant to sit here. Perfect for the most popular national sport of the Germans (we are no exception!): watching passers-by! The spacious Eigelstein hall is ideal for events for up to 100 people. And for anyone who needs to cool down in the warm weather: the house is air-conditioned, so perfect for drinking a quick Kölsch or two at the bar and cooling off a bit!

Passion in the blood, history in the house

Olaf, who has been working for the Malzmühle for over 10 years, is in charge of the house. The fact that Olaf has the right attitude towards the Kölsch product is also reflected in his nickname, Kölschgott, which he bears with pride. When the brewery took over the Kölsche Boor, Olaf was there from the very beginning and also wielded the brush! He was not involved in the beautiful wall paintings, however. But they alone are worth a visit to the house!

Not only is the smaller picture in the front area with funny sayings about beer consumption ideal for beautiful photos, in the back area there is a meter-long, impressive painting with historical reference.

Painting in "The Kölsche Boor"

The depiction of the honoring of the farmers and a view of medieval Cologne with its still existing fortress walls along the Rhine promenade take us back to times long forgotten. Also noteworthy are the huge ships, which you would normally classify as sea-going shipping, but which once actually sailed up and down the Rhine. They came from the Netherlands to Cologne, where the goods they transported were then loaded onto flatter ships. Have you perhaps heard of the staple right? By the way, if you are ever interested in a wonderful historical tour, then I can highly recommend Harry from Kölngeflüster !

Art in "The Kölsche Boor"

A wide range for all tastes

Since the Kölsche Boor belongs to the Malzmühle, you can of course also find the delicious schnapps from Sünner here. And those of you who want to stay alcohol-free can also look forward to the selection of Sünner lemonades etc. But we Kölsch lovers will of course stick with our lovely, golden full-bodied beer! The food on offer in the house naturally includes lovely, rustic brewery cuisine! And if you fancy it, you can also look forward to two bowling alleys , which can be booked online or on site. I must go bowling again!

Em Kölsche Boor

What else? Well, once a month there is a great sing-along concert with Kraad un Plaat and carnival fans can look forward to the Brauhaus meeting again next year. But even more importantly: we are also paying a visit to the Kölsche Boor on our special tour with Hans Breuer! Have you booked yet?
